Sewing Machine Needles - Wing Needle
Sewing Machine Needles - Wing Needle
A wing needle, also known as a hemstitch needle, is used to create decorative, openwork stitches that is traditionally seen on linen and is often called Heirloom Sewing as it's a vintage style of sewing often seen on vintage linen, tablecloths, napkins etc.
How it works
The wings on either side of the needle push apart the fabric's fibres, creating larger holes. The thread then holds the fibres in place, creating a lace-like effect.
What it's used for
Wing needles are most effective on lightweight, natural woven fabrics like cotton and . They can be used to create vintage-style hemstitching, borders, and embellishments on garments, tablecloths, and handkerchiefs.
How to use it
You may find your sewing machine has Heirloom Stitches built in. These will mimic the hand sewn version from 1800's
You should hand wind the needle down to ensure it fits between the plates before sewing with the pedal etc Start with a small test piece on a similar fabric.
